
Adkins was raised by a single mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. She was an avid singer of contemporary pop songs as a young girl and was able to play the guitar and clarinet. She came across Etta, a mid-century rhythm-and blues vocalist, in her teens, and started to pursue a career musician. As she learned in a secondary school of performing arts, funded by the federal government and a friend began posting songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. After graduating, Adkins' music caught the attention of record labels. She got a contract in 2006 with XL Recordings.
